The 5 Mistakes Parents Make During P1 Registration That Cost Them a School

P1 registration is stressful and parents make predictable mistakes under pressure. These 5 are the most common and the most costly. Avoiding them will not guarantee you your first choice school, but making them can definitely cost you a place you could have gotten.

Mistake 1: Not Checking Phase 2C Ballot Data Until After Registering

The most common mistake is choosing a school without knowing how oversubscribed it is at Phase 2C. Parents fall in love with a school's reputation or location without checking the actual ballot pressure. Then they register and discover the school had 100 applicants over the available places in the most recent year.

The fix: Before you register, check the Phase 2C ballot data for every school you are considering. The town articles on this site show you exactly how many applicants were over the available places at each school in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

Mistake 2: Putting Only 1 School as Choice

Some parents put only their first-choice school and do not use the second and third choice slots. If the ballot does not go their way, their child goes into a second-round allocation with whatever places remain. which may be schools with no vacancy at all in Phase 2C.

The fix: Always use all 3 available choices. Put your first choice first. Put a safe school you are comfortable with as your second choice. Put another safe school as your third choice. The third choice is your fallback if everything goes wrong.

Mistake 3: Forgetting to Check Phase 2A and 2B Eligibility

Some parents are eligible for Phase 2A or Phase 2B priority but do not claim it because they do not realise they qualify. Your own primary school alumni status, your church affiliation, your volunteer service. these are all Phase 2A or 2B eligible routes that many parents overlook.

The fix: Before registering, write down every school you have any connection to. Your own primary school, your church's affiliated school, the school your RC volunteers for. Check with each school if your connection qualifies for Phase 2A or Phase 2B. Use every priority route you have.

Mistake 4: Missing the Registration Deadline

MOE's P1 registration portal has a specific closing date for each phase. Missing it means your child goes into the next phase. or in the case of Phase 2C, into the second-round allocation which may have very limited places remaining.

The fix: Put the registration dates in your calendar the moment MOE announces the schedule. Set reminders 1 week before, 1 day before, and on the day itself. Register early in the window, not at the last minute.

Mistake 5: Not Having a Backup School Ready

Even if you do everything right, the ballot may not go your way. Parents who have not identified a backup school end up accepting whatever second-round allocation they receive. which may be a school they never considered and know nothing about.

The fix: Identify 2 to 3 schools in your preferred town that have never triggered a Phase 2C ballot. These are your backup schools. Research them now, not after the ballot. Know what makes them acceptable so that if you end up there, you are comfortable with the choice.

The Underlying Principle

All 5 mistakes come from the same root cause: not preparing before the registration window opens. P1 registration is not a test your child takes. it is a process you manage. The parents who get their first choice are the ones who spent months or years preparing: checking data, using priority routes, identifying backups.

If you are reading this and your child's registration is within the next 12 months, start now. Browse the Phase 2C ballot data for your town here to identify your target and backup schools.
